Captain’s Prize
John Bergin proved a very popular winner of Mr. Noel Rothwell’s Captain’s prize which concluded on Saturday last. John had shot a score of 69 in the first round the previous weekend. Lying in joint third place, he knew would have to shoot a similar score to have any chance of winning the coveted prize.
John played a steady round all through and birdied the 12th. Standing on the last tee John needed a par to ensure victory. In the backbunker in three, he played a brilliant shot to get up and down for par
thus ensuring a great victory with a score of 68 and a grand total of137. J.D. Harding came home in second position on 140 with the gross going to Jason Brennan.

The Blue Monster Course bared its teeth in Castlecomer over the weekend. Over ninety golfers took on the ultimate challenge of the men’s singles competition sponsored by First Choice Bathrooms & Tiles and held off the back blue markers. The course won out with no golfer managing to match his handicap. However Kevin Brennan playing off 6
had the great satisfaction of triumphing on the toughest layout Castlecomer has to offer. Kevin played a very steady round and then birdied the eighteenth hole to pip Brian Young and Shan Butler, with all three returning scores of 35 pts. Congratulations to Kevin.

The old saying, Strike when the iron is hot, came very much into playin glorious Castlecomer over the weekend. Joe Dowd who was third in last Thursday’s singles struck again in the weekend men’s singles
stroke. Joe returned a brilliant score of 67 nett to run out a comfortable winner. Joe was playing nicely after 14 holes and then scored a birdie 2 on the short 15th and finished well from there.
Declan Dooley finished second with a fine score of 70 nett, 73 gross.

The first 18 hole Mens singles took place over the weekend. The weather held fine for the most part but some play was lost with the early morning frost on Sunday. Dick Farrell lost no time in recording the first milestone of the new season. Dick hit a seven iron to the par 3 ninth hole and secured the first hole in one in Castlecomer for 2016. Congrats to Dick.
John Stedmond had the honour of winning the first competition of the year by returning a great score of 41 pts. Anthony Holohan finished 2nd with 40 pts with Padraig Curry brining in 39 pts in third place. Jason Brennan took the gross prize with 34 pts.

A great crowd of well over a hundred golfers attended the Captains Drive In held on Sunday.
Men’s Captain Noel Rothwell and Lady Captain Ellen Phelan were cheered on by their families, friends and club members as they both hit great ceremonial drives down the fairway. Both Noel and Ellen thanked all for attending and wished all Castlecomer golfers a great golfing year ahead.

Captains Drive In
Men’s Captain Noel Rothwell and Lady Captain Ellen Phelan will hold their Drive – In on Sunday 28th Feb.
There will be a 9 hole team competition on that day to honour our Captains’ Drive – In.
The competition will be a four person scramble, taking place in both the morning and afternoon. (shotgun start)
A draw will take place for partners. Entries for the morning session will be taken at 9.30 a.m. with play commencing at 10. a.m. Entries for the afternoon session will be taken at 1.p.m. with play commencing directly after the Drive – In at 1.30 p.m.
Please place you name and your handicap on the sheet in clubhouse in either the morning or afternoon sections.

The final qualifying positions in the Winter Team League are as per positions after round 7.
Teams E, B, K and G have qualified for the top 4 final play off.
This playoff will be held over the week ending Sunday 14th Feb in conjunction with the normal winter competition.
All four teams will start from scratch.
The playoff format will be the same as in previous weeks but each team’s top 7 scores will count instead of 4. In the event of a tie the score of each team’s eight placed player will decide the outcome and so on down the line if still unresolved.
Please note that hole 17 is closed. Hole 3 is included instead.
