Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe..”
There was a great turnout for the Gardening night on Thursday 30th April. With spring in the air and plants wishing to ‘burst into life’ it was an opportune time for Assumpta Mealy to share here wonderful knowledge of horticulture.
Assumpta gave a a very comprehensive & professional presentation on all aspects of horticulture. Assumpta brought in approximately 70 beautiful plants which were displayed in and around the clubhouse. She gave tips on dealing with the dreaded ‘weeds’, fertilising & irrigation of plants, lawns & also advice of plant and shrub selection.
Sincere thanks are due to the House Committee and in particular Martin Rowe who invested considerable time into the organisation of the event.
Sincere thanks are also due to Assumpta for her support and assistance in making the night such a wonderful success. We wish Assumpta all the best and continued success with her business!

New Members – Taster Sessions
Remember, new members are always welcome. Anyone interested in trying and tasting golf that come to the notice of existing members should be invited to come and sample the joys of golf, without obligation. There are many provisions being made, in the club, to have taster sessions for those speculating about playing. At these taster sessions, the basic fundamentals of golf can be learned first for best effectiveness and enjoyable efforts. If any are interested and express their wondering thought about golf, however vague, to a member, the member could contact a committee member for details about the taster sessions for newcomers that are on offer and coming on stream. That information should be relayed back to the one who showed interest or wonder. The only reason for anyone asking is in their search for a positive response, so, much is being done to ensure the club responds positively.

He covered his last six holes in level par to return a final round 72 and record a two shot victory. Martin Brennan ‘s last round heroics earned him second place with Michael Manogue coming third. Michael Buggy captured the gross by one shot from Jason Brennan. In the student section Declan Buggy played magnificent golf shooting 68 on both days . Declan has many years of golf to look forward to on the back of this great performance. That night J.D. Play with the Pros at the BMW Championship in Colorado!
Castlecomer GC joins US PGA Tour
One lucky player at Castlecomer will get to “partner” Rory McIlroy next weekend as Castlecomer Golf Club joins the US PGA tour in a new format competition! The unique event will be run in conjunction with the FED EX Cup finale which takes place in Colorado from 4th – 7th September. Each player participating in our event will draw “playing partner” from the 70 strong BMW Championship in Colorado.
Players participating will play the clubs stableford scoring competition on either Saturday 6th or Sunday 7th September. Their score will be added to that of their US PGA playing partners final round. The professionals will be given a stableford score based on their strokes taken in their final round. For example if they are level par they will score 36 points, -1 equals 37 points while +1 will equal 35 points. The professionals score will be added to their playing partner at Castlecomer GC to give an overall winner. This is a novel competition designed to add a little extra to the weekends competition.
To add even more extra spice to the competition there is also €1500 up for grabs for any player on either day to achieve a “hole in 1” on the par 3 third hole. This is run in association with the Hole in One Club of Ireland. In the unlikely event that more than one player achieves the feat then the money is shared.
There will of course be the usual prizes for the stableford competition in Castlecomer as well as a special one for the competition involving the BMW Championship. Both ladies and men can play, plus with an entry fee of €10 for members and €20 for visitors there is included complimentary tea/coffee and a scone and visitors are very welcome. Booking can be made online at www.Castlecomergolf.ie or tel: 056-4441139 and we’ll do the booking for you.
