Saturday 18th August. Mr Seamus Brennan’s Captain’s Prize.

Seamus Brennan hosted the final round of his Capatin’s Prize at balmy Castlecomer on Saturday.

Over 120 golfers played in the beautiful weather conditions and with the course in excellent shape a great day’s golf was had by all.

Michael Dermody stood on the 17th tee knowing he was well in contention.  Playing off 5, having shot a 68 in the first round, he knew that he needed a special finish to have a chance of winning. Michael birdied 17 and then proceeded to get up and down from the greenside bunker on 18 for another birdie, around of 69 and a two round total of 137. This gave him a one shot victory over Anthony Holohan. Anthony playing off 8 had earlier posted a total of 138 with scores of 69 on both days.  Karl O’ Donnell had a great 2nd round to claim the gross prize on 152.  Gerry Mealy claimed 3rd prize with a grand total of 140.

This is a great opportunity to take up golf meet new people and have fun. Gardening Night: Well done to all involved in the gardening night and to David and Mary from Glanbia, Countrylife. They presented us with lots of practical information that will help change our gardens. A great night was had by all. Castlecomer Golf Club Team Championship: The months of planning under the baton of younger generation golfers, Fergal O’ Neill and Colin Dunne, should reap a rich harvest, with the commencement of play at 2pm on Thursday. With meticulous planning and a fantastic response generated in the club to these enthusiastic young golfing leaders, the golf in Castlecomer over the 4 days promises to showcase the Club – full of a glorious tradition since 1935 – in all its true glory. We extend a very warm welcome to the many visiting teams, especially, some of whom may be playing, even, for the first time in Castlecomer. We encourage all players to arrive, at least 30 minutes in advance of tee times. With a full team of stewards on duty, it is hoped all golfers will have a most pleasant, memorable, skilfully-played and thoroughly enjoyable experience in Castlecomer. Mt Juliet, inspired by Sean O’ Neill, Ted Hoyne and his brother Alan to name but a few on the home team were simply unbeatable. With 4 matches won by the home team, Castlecomer’s  Murty Coonan and Martin Brennan – who were 3 up with 3 to play – were called in. Well done also to the sporting challenge of team mates,Seamus Brennan and John Kelly, Johnny Brennan and Seamus Malone, Donie Walsh and Michael Doheny and  Christy Comerford and Richie Hogan who felt the full force of a fine tuned Mount Juliet team who were adept at finding the key positions on the greens with their second shots on the par 4’s and third shots on the par 5’s. Castlecomer couldn’t have been beaten by  more sporting and friendly hosts. The fine  meal afterwards with opposing players sitting alongside each other and the ensuing banter summed up the success of the trip to a beautiful course on, to date, the most sun-splashed pleasant evening of the year. Take a well earned bow  Mt Juliet. Best of luck in the next round. TEE TO GREEN Congratulations to Colin Dunne and Fergal O’ Neill on winning the weekend 18 hole fourball, They scored  47 points with a better back 9 just edged out the Patrick and Adam Comerford team who scored 47 points also.. Captain’s Drive In!

At the third time of asking, the Golfing Gods finally chose to shine their light on Margaret & Seamie! A beautiful Spring day brought out the Castlecomer faithful in excellent numbers for the official start to the golfing year and If the arrival of the Captains today is anything to by, we are in for a spectacular year of golf! Chauffeur driven in a 1980 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, (courtesy of Mr. Ned Kelly) sipping champagne en route, proceedings were more akin to a royal wedding than a sporting occassion!  Once the golf got underway, the good conditions ensured a high scoring day. The eventual winners were Michael Curry, Michael Furlong, Gerry O’Neill and Ann O’Neill.
