Inter Club Team Competition: Well done to Castlecomer Ladies who beat Carrick on Suir in The Intermediate Cup on Thursday 4th April, in Kilkenny Golf Club. The team were as follows: first out was Ita Madigan who won on the 13th, Maureen Norton won  on the the 16th and  Theresa Manning won on the 15th while Jo Costigan  was 3 up and Caroline Conway was 1 up when they were called in.  Congratulations to the team and to their  team managers Noreen Kinsella and Ellen Phelan.

Thursday, 11th April:  After a six month winter break, the  Thursday 18 Hole Men’s Open Stableford  Singles makes a very welcome return to the 2019 golfing calendar  next Thursday, 11th April . This is a competition which has proved popular with visitors and members alike and no doubt its return every Thursday from now till the end of September will be popularly received by golf lovers everywhere. Visitors at €15 per round represents great value. Thursday, 11th coincides with the commencement of play at the US Masters, at Augusta so no better  date to play a round of golf at Castlecomer golf club and still enjoy  coverage of the Masters later in the evening. The golf season has truly arrived.
SENIORS: Thirty four golfers played in the 16h classic on Wednesday, 3rd April. There was a  strong, cold northerly wind throughout but golfers finished just in time to avoid the commencement of afternoon hail showers.The testing conditions provided a stiff challenge and in that regard the winning team of Murty Coonan (12), Ger Comerford (23) and Noreen Kinsella (24) fared best with 79 pts, followed by Christy Comerford (14), Noel Brennan (21) and Jim Doran (23) in second place on 68 pts, while not far behind in 3rd place on 67 pts were Donie Walsh (15), Des Murphy (25) and Gerry O’ Neill (27).

Attention: 9 Hole scramble commences on Tues 9th April at 5.30hrs. All members and non-members welcome. GUI handicap not required (€5 for non members)

ALL-IRELAND FOURBALL: Congratulations to our Men’s All-Ireland Fourball team, managed by Pat Haughton, on their great 3-0 victory over Carlow GC in the first round played on Saturday 30th March. We comfortably won the first two matches at home and the first match away, and were performing well is the other matches when they were called in. Thirty three golfers competed for honours and in one of the most hotly contested Bog Oak competitions in recent years, only two points separated the “magnificent seven” prizewinners.Congratulations to everyone who played on the day and no doubt the tremendous quality of the golf played reflected both the excellent form of the players and near perfect weather and course conditions. TEXTILE RECYCLING: Castlecomer golf club and the SOS are holding a joint textile recycling collection on Monday 15th April to raise funds for the SOS and the golf club.. Bags can be dropped into the golf club any day between 9am and 5pm or into the SOS Centre, Kilkenny Rd, Castlecomer. Bags may contain unwanted clothes,duvet covers,sheets,towels, curtains,tea towels, jeans,shoes, boots, wellingtons and golf shoes (no duvets or pillows accepted). Recycle bags can be collected from the SOS and the golf club office but any plastic bag is acceptable.

CAPTAINS’ DRIVE-IN:  The Captains’ Drive-In took place on Sunday 10th March, 2019.  To mark the occasion,  Lady Captain Jo Costigan and Captain Martin O’Neill dressed in period costume and arrived by way of horse and carriage to the rapturous cheers from their families, friends and club members. The golfing year  officially started in Castlecomer golf club after both captains teed off in fine style. Poor weather conditions did not hamper the spirits of those gathered. A 9 hole scramble was played in the morning followed by the Drive-In and a 9 hole scramble in the afternoon. Well done to  the  many golfers who played in the scramble. Congratulations to our captains Martin O’ Neill and Jo Costigan for making the day memorable and special indeed for Castlecomer golf club.

COURSE BINS: Due to the fact that  drinks bottles and sweet wrappers have been found especially but not exclusively near  tee boxes, the club is appealing for a concerted effort from all golfers to  put their bottles and wrappers in the tee-box bins or in  their golf bags. LADIES: Due to popular demand, the Lamb 9 hole competition is continuing until further notice. Entry fee €2.  Re-enter as often as you like.

NOTE: Castlecomer Golf Club Captain’s Drive-In has been postponed from this Sunday March 3rd  to Sunday March 10th. A winter 14 hole Open Singles will take place this weekend.

Captains’  Drive-In (Jo Costigan and Martin O’Neill): The Captains’ Drive-In will take place next Sunday the  3rd of March. A nine hole four person scramble (shot gun start) has been  scheduled for the  morning and afternoon. The morning entries take place at 9.30a.m. with play commencing at 10a.m. while  the afternoon entries take place  at 1 p.m. with play commencing directly after the drive-in at 1.30p.m.  All members are encouraged to play. Please enter names on sheet provided in the hallway of the club indicating preference for morning or afternoon time. Everyone in the club wish our captains,  Jo and Martin all the best next Sunday and throughout the  year.

Membership is now due from all members. Kindly pay same to Linda in the office which is opened on any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday.  Prize-winners must have their membership paid in full to be eligible to receive a prize.

Ladies Winter League: Congratulations to team B, this year’s winners of the winter league competition. On the victorious team were  H.Fogarty, L. Mansfield, T. Manning, H.Dunne, B. Brophy and T. SENIORS: 35 ladies and gents played in the 14 hole classic on Wednesday 20th February in breezy but dry conditions. The 16th and 17th holes were in play replacing  holes 7 and 8 for the first time since early November. Players were delighted to be playing these holes again with everyone refamiliarising themselves with the approach shots and the breaks on the greens. Scoring was excellent but  interestingly and unsurprisingly reflected the lower indexes of 16 and 17 as compared with 7 and 8.
